Before she quickly brushed it aside, her single tear drop traced a trail - like a silver scalpel slicing so quickly through flesh that the very bone is revealed before blood begins to rush through the wound - such was this tear - a momentary revealing that she cared too much, that her need was too great and that her hope for recognition, salvation actually, would not come. Not tonight.

Your Votes Could Catapult a Local Artist to National Fame
Shelter dogs have amazing life stories. From the tragedies in their lives to the joy of finding a forever home. Local artist and shelter pet advocate Scott Davis features the day-to-day antics of his favorite dog, Sherlock in a comic strip that cuts to the heart of the simple joys that pets bring to our lives. Well, now that comic is representing NC in an international competition and needs your help to move forward and win.
The contest is sponsored in part by Creators Syndicate, the organization behind the most creative cartooning talent in the world and the prize is a contract with the company. The website where voting takes place (www.thecartooniststudio.com) was formed by some fantastic talent, including the artists behind Beatle Bailey and Baby Blues. Simply put, winning this contest would put Scott Davis’ work in publications all around the globe.
Helping is simple and easy. All you need to do is register online and vote up to 4 times a day for the comic…yep, that’s it!
STEP ONE—Go to: http://bit.ly/hzS958 and click on the mini comic image to go to the voting page for Scott’s comic, SHERLOCK UNLEASHED.
STEP TWO—Click the “I Like It” button
STEP THREE—Log in (if you already have an account) or register (first time only and we promise no spam or annoying messages come your way)…write down your username and password in a safe place
STEP FOUR—Once your vote registers, you’ll see it mark the comic with a check mark and then it will tell you the time when you can cast another vote. Remember to come back time and again and vote, vote, vote!
The strip receives up to 4 votes each day, from each voter, by people just like you. And at the end of each week, the strips with the most votes move on to the next week of voting. Think of it like Survivor or American Idol for a comic strip. The contest runs for 10 weeks and at the end of 10 weeks a winner is crowned. Pretty cool to think you could be part of such a neat prize for a local artist and our region, right? So, what are you waiting for?
If you love the joy that dogs and pets bring to our lives, take a few minutes to register and help the strip move ahead! Every single vote counts and the race is close at the top. Wouldn’t it be great to have a local artist showcased in newspapers around the globe? Especially with a strip that features other local furry friends and gives even more attention to our fantastic region?
in my hands
in my hands
gentle and small
wonder and delight
an ebbing of laughter and stress
in my hands
the future rests
tasks to be learned
suprises of nature and mind
in my hands
a bundle of memories
my daughter's squirming
my son's gentle dreams
in my hands
vessel of potential
grasping for the next embrace
of that gift
offered daily
to my hands
in my hands
gentle and small
wonder and delight
an ebbing of laughter and stress
in my hands
the future rests
tasks to be learned
suprises of nature and mind
in my hands
a bundle of memories
my daughter's squirming
my son's gentle dreams
in my hands
vessel of potential
grasping for the next embrace
of that gift
offered daily
to my hands
The sputter can surprise us
Running wide ass open
Taking no prisoners
Casting laughter like caution
To the wind
Blowing up a storm of passionate dreams
And friends cheering us on
The road turns, twisting
Thought and perceptions
Into unrecognizable shards
Broken, poured out, spilled
Across memories of tomorrow’s
Dreamers awake
When the fuel of creation
Runs dry
Thus fools rush in
Where angels fear to tread
And shout
"Fill’er UP!"
The Right Word
Do you ever find yourself stuck, fingers poised upon the keys and yet – nothing. There is a thought, the beginning of a phrase hanging on the very edge of your mind and then – nothing. You know there is a word to describe, or at least a word that will begin the fall of the avalanche of prose that is pressing so dutifully upon your mind, straining to flow through you and onto the page and into the world, a message of fine worth and clear depth – waiting for that beginning, that right word to give the process the smallest nudge into existence.
Well, that is where I am right now and that word eludes me…
As I strive for self actualization
Demanding more of my mind, spirit and body each day
Determined to succeed, to claim yesterday’s distant horizon
As today’s dawn
It occurs to me that I might have it all wrong
What if these images of status and position
That haunt my mind each evening are self contrived
And the resistance that pushes me backward
Each hard fought day is prophetic
What if my truth is that
This world simply needs another bum?
Word Mire
there is too much
written
that only scratches the surface of it
like the cats claws picking
shredding cashmere as if it were
an old rug
too many words
written
that only pretend passion
like roadside clay jars
imitating ancient Greek
vases
there are so many words
written
that define verbosely beauty
sprayed out like tobacco spit
dried on the edges of a saloon
cuspidor
there are too many words
written
that I must wade through
fighting mundane currents
insipid tidal pools spawning
muck
there are too many words
written
around those few gems, crystals
that find their way through the morass
and glisten delicate hues of
you
there are too many words
written
that must be read
and I have lost
the time
the patience
the heart
to read my way to you
now
now
Need a Christmas gift idea? Have a cat lover in your life? Who doesn't? (If you don't have a cat lover in your life then you must pay indulgences to @Lucy_Cat. It's a fact).
My friend and local (ok. she lives in Madison - but it's almost local) author, Dena Harris, has a new book (Who Moved My Mouse: A Self Help Book for Cats Who Don't Need Any)out just in time for your holiday giving.
Your mission is two fold:
1. Go buy the book.
2. Read Dena's latest blog post and tell her I said "HI!" (no i'm not getting paid for this, but only because I can't figure out how).
Wait...ok.. 3
3. Like her book on Facebook.
Go shop. It's Christmas time.

“My prayer is not the whimpering of a beggar nor a confession of love. Nor is it the trivial reckoning of a small tradesman: Give me and I shall give you.
My prayer is the report of a soldier to his general: This is what I did today, this is how I fought to save the entire battle in my own sector, these are the obstacles I found, this is how I plan to fight tomorrow… ‘Leader!’ I cry. He turns his face towards me, and I shudder to confront his anguish.
Our love for each other is rough and ready, we sit at the same table, we drink the same wine in this low tavern of life.”
--“The Saviors of God: Spiritual Exercises” by Nikos Kazantzakis
I am truly a fan of Tolken’s ‘The Lord of The Rings” trilogy. I remember spending hours upon hours tucked quietly in my college dorm room, devouring words upon words, page after page as the fantastic saga unfolded and I journeyed with the heroes of Middle Earth in their quests for victory. In the films of the past two years, we have seen the cinematic adaptation of this tale, and I find myself equally enthralled again with Tolken’s message.
Be it the battles of Elves and Orcs, the magical sparring of light wielding Wizards, or the inner struggle of the spirits of Hobbits and a solitary Golum, the quest and it’s urgency is the same: Avoid the malformed power of the ring until it can be destroyed, at all costs. The heroes know the importance of that last phrase, ‘at all costs.’ Each is willing to, and some in turn do, give their very life for this cause. It is a wonderful drama of the high cost of noble victory.
It is this urgency that I hear in the words of Nikos Kazantzakis written above. If indeed, as I believe is the case, we humans are in need of help beyond ourselves in order to fulfill the beauty of this human drama, and if we are destined to suffer and fail along the way without this help, then there is an equal sense of urgency about our quest as is that of the soldier and the heroes of Tolken’s tale. All the more, if the quest for this assistance is a path that is known by some and open to others, and yet, is never made clear, how can the battle be won?
How tempting it is to sneak away into the safety of Bilbo Baggins’ shire (for ‘Adventures make one late for dinner”) or to hide in the security of the establishment office, for there we feel safe. Might we be missing the more important call for action?
I do not claim to know THE way that anyone should live, but what I do know is that I am committed to the journey toward The Divine, that power that aids and guides me. Do I travel in too scarce a number today? Should I not pause by the road, and share a bit of the tale that has brought me thus far? Can I not beckon others onward to their journey as well? I am made to ask of myself today, “What report can I give to God, today?”
